Professor Dix’s career spans decades of high-stakes crisis response. He investigated lessons from the rail tunnels beneath the World Trade Center immediately after the September 11 attacks. He has also conducted international investigations into the London and Madrid bombings. In addition, he safely evacuated a motorway tunnel in Albania before it fully collapsed. In 2007, he served as Coroner’s Special Investigator following the Burnley Tunnel Fire in Australia, where three people died. His extraordinary story was the subject of an ABC Australian Story documentary, Man Underground.

In November 2023, the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand, India, collapsed, trapping 41 workers 200 feet underground. Authorities called in Arnold as international rescuers raced to drill through the rubble with heavy earth-boring machinery, an approach that was actually making the situation more dangerous, since the vibrations risked triggering a further collapse.
His critical intervention wasn’t a new piece of technology. It was a re-framing of the problem. He argued for abandoning the aggressive drilling in favour of slower, “soft mining” techniques and hand excavation. This approach prioritised the stability of the mountain over the speed everyone was demanding. It was an unpopular, high-pressure call to make, with 41 lives on the line and a global media contingent camped outside. It worked. Rescuers brought all 41 workers out alive after 17 days underground.

As of September 2026, he is actively working as an international consultant on the response to catastrophic flooding across Nepal and Tibet, flooding that destroyed dozens of hydroelectric power stations and trapped hundreds of workers underground near the border.
Coordinating remotely with rescue teams on the ground and specialists overseas, Professor Dix has applied the same critical-thinking method that guided Silkyara. Rather than searching broadly, he directed teams to what he calls “Goldilocks zones”.
